We all know we should network… but let’s be honest, it’s not always easy to head out after a long day for networking drinks, an end-of-year Christmas event, or a big conference. But every time I’ve shown up - even when I didn’t really feel like it - it’s been worth it.
Because the truth is: these events introduce you to people, ideas, and opportunities you’d never find if you stayed behind your desk or went home and sat on the couch.
New People = New Possibilities
One of my favourite things about attending events is how unpredictable they are. You never know who you’ll meet or where a single conversation might lead.
A great example is Envision Displays's partnership with Opera Queensland . Through that connection, I’ve met some incredibly inspiring and creative people - storytellers, performers, production minds - all with unique perspectives that made me think differently about creativity and business. Those aren’t people I would have ever crossed paths with otherwise.
And then there are groups like the VCC Valley Chamber of Commerce and Business South Bank. Every time we show up at their events, we walk away thinking: “Wow, we had no idea that company existed… or that we even needed what they do!”
These moments don’t happen by accident. They happen because we turn up.
Learning Happens Everywhere
It’s not just big conferences that expand your skills - sometimes the best insights come from casual chats at the bar or a conversation while waiting for the next speaker.
At one event, I remember chatting with someone who gave me a completely different way of thinking about client engagement. It wasn’t a keynote, it wasn’t a workshop - just a five-minute conversation that shifted my approach.
That’s the magic of being in the room.
Your Network Becomes Your Toolkit
The more people you meet, the more resources you have around you. Need advice? Someone in your network probably has the answer. Need a specialist? Someone knows someone. Need inspiration? There’s always someone with a story that sparks something new.
Building a network isn’t just about growing your LinkedIn list - it’s about growing your support system, your opportunities, and your visibility.
Real Connections Build Real Trust
There’s something that happens when you talk face-to-face - the laughs, the shared stories, the genuine conversations. You get to know people beyond their job titles.
That kind of connection is what leads to real collaboration, real partnerships, and real opportunities.
The Power of Just Showing Up
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: you can’t predict which event will lead to your next opportunity, but you can increase your odds by being there.
Whether it’s a big trade show, a Christmas party, or a simple networking drink after work, saying “yes” often leads to the best stories - and the best connections.
So next time that invite appears in your inbox, maybe don’t overthink it – accept it straight away and show up. You never know who you’ll meet!
